Shawn Israel PT, DPT

Shawn has been practicing physical therapy since 2008 and recently joined Waypoint Pediatric Therapies in September, 2015. She received her doctorate in physical therapy from the University of Washington and since then has experience practicing in early intervention, preschool and outpatient settings.  Her primary areas of interest and expertise include working with children and adults with cancer and children with neurological diagnoses.  Specific diagnoses she has experience working with include: Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Torticollis, Leukemia, Brain tumors, Traumatic Brain Injuries, hypotonia, developmental coordination disorder, and developmental delay.   In addition to practicing clinically at Waypoint, she works part-time in the University of Washington’s (UW) Division of Physical Therapy helping in the pathophysiology, applied neuroscience courses and acting as the co-instructor in the pediatric physical therapy course, and has been a member of the UW faculty since 2011.

Shawn is passionate about inclusion, ensuring that all children participate and are included in their preferred school, community and extra-curricular activities.  She can be seen taking children out on trails, to the park, planning fitness opportunities for children, and collaborating with teachers, coaches and families.

Shawn has been a member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) since 2005.  She is actively involved in the Oncology and Pediatric sections of the APTA and co-created the Pediatric Oncology Special Interest group serving as the vice chair from 2009-2011.  She has given presentations at various local and national physical therapy conferences on topics of pediatric oncology physical therapy and transdisciplinary school based physical therapy services.

Outside of work, she loves cycling, hiking, photography, being active outside, cooking, and all things food-related.
